MISSION BEACH, California – Fun in the sun at Mission Beach turned into a terrifying situation according to NBC San Diego. A 16-year-old girl ended up buried up to her neck in sand on Tuesday. San Diego lifeguards reported that the teen was 6 to 8 feet deep in a hole that partially collapsed, making it impossible for her to climb out. “We just saw her head and arms sticking up,” said San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Jacob Magness. Initially, rescuers attempted to pull her out but were unsuccessful, leading them to begin digging. After about 20 minutes of digging, the girl walked out of the hole uninjured. Witnesses erupted in applause and cheers as she emerged.
Lifeguards escorted the teen to a stretcher and then to a paramedic truck for assessment.The first aid team assessed the girl in the ambulance and then discharged her. The San Diego Police Department assisted with crowd control during the rescue operation, according to SDPD Officer John Buttle. After the rescue, the rescuers filled in the hole.
